Font Trends

Which non-fashionable fonts would you like to see make a comeback?

I remember a few years ago, I saw an interview with fashion designer Wayne Hemingway, who said that when he gets approached to develop a new clothing range, one of the first things he does is look at the fashion catalogues of 25 years ago for inspiration - because what goes around, comes around.

I suppose the same logic could be applied to fonts. Take something like Erik Spiekermann’s Meta font. Twenty years ago, it was everywhere. A warm-looking font that had widespread appeal. Then partly through over-familiarity or over-use, it fell out of favour (apart from on the title sequence to 8 out of 10 cats!). Then there was the spell when every book title seemed to be set in DIN.

Going full circle, can a font become so unfashionable that it actually becomes fashionable? And how long does that take? As designers, for the next fashionable font trends, should we be looking back as well as forwards?
